To start out, when it comes to enjoying Cigars, there is no right or wrong. It all depends on what YOU enjoy, and how YOU enjoy it. There is no universal truth, except for one. Plume is mold.
Cutting: When cutting your Cigar, you can choose between a plethora of different cuts. Depending on the ring gauge, you can choose between a guillotine or straight cut, a punch cut, or a V-Cut. For example, when you are faced with a slim ring gauge of 38, I would advise for a guillotine cut. If you are enjoying a Robusto, then maybe a V-Cut would be better suited.
Lighting and Toasting: To the ones I love the most, I reiterate the importance of the proper toast. To allow the Cigar to express its full and complex flavor potential, it is pivotal to toast the Cigar first. “Toasting” is done by softly lighting the foot of Cigar, ideally with non-scented matches or cedar wood. In order to reap the highest benefit, it is important to allow for around 2 to 3 full matches to help bring the carefully crafted Cigar to life. In short, using yellow soft flames allows the Cigar to be enjoyed more than using blue flames.
Storage: There is a difference between storing Old World - Cuban Cigars and New World - Non Cuban Cigars. My recommendation is to store them separately as they ideally require different temperatures and humidity levels. It also depends on your desired goal. If your goal is to age the Cigar or if you want to enjoy it sooner, rather than later, the storage plays an important part.
Enjoying: This is the most important part of indulging in a Cigar. While my suggestions can be helpful on your journey, it is important to try your own methods, and see what you enjoy most. Cigars exist to be enjoyed, if you want to dunk the head of the cigar in your favorite whiskey, or if you enjoy them more while dipping them in Sprite, although I would not recommend this, it is up to you to decide. We are the sole architects of our own life.
